Would You Love your Son or Daughter Less if they were Gay?
November 29th 2006 01:27
You have the typical dreams of a parent: watching your child walk down the aisle, spoiling your first grandchild, and a life as smooth as possible for your son or daughter.
But what happens when they reveal to you that they are gay.
How would you react at first learning this information? How would you react after some time has passed?
Parental support can go a long way in helping a gay youth to accept and value themselves.
Can you be tolerant, patient, and accepting of your child's sexuality, realizing that their road ahead will be a difficult one indeed especially if their parents don't support them. This is when your love for your boy or girl shines through and is bigger than your child's sexual orientation, whatever it may be.
Yours dreams have altered but that doesn't mean the new ones can't be fulfilling and rewarding. Remember, this can be a crisis or an opportunity, its all up to you.

Did you hear Moby's hopes that his kids will grow up to be gay? I wrote about in on my blog here.

Beautifully said. I checked out your link & it showed me a different perspective on things, which I always welcome.
I think you will make some lucky kid(s) a wonderful mother one day.

I would hope to hell that I wouldn't be so shallow as to ever stop loving my child no matter what happens in their life, and certainly that would include homosexuality and lesbianism.
However, I just had this conversation with my mother two nights ago, she is very against the lifestyle. No, I wouldn't call her homophobic...she is an older woman who is scared of the changes in traditional roles for men and women. That she is phobic about...
I told her that I wanted a gay. My friend has two great gays...(this is how they refer to themselves...her gays. Is that great or what?) So, I want one. My mother proceeded to tell me I needed to see a psychiatrist, which of course, led to a more serious conversation.
I asked her this question nearly word for word, if she would love my children if they were gay. Now, the woman is starting to grow a bit in this area. Once upon a time, she said "No, they would be disowned." To which I replied, "Then you will disown every member of my family, including me. That's how disowning my children will work." That was a few years ago.
This time she said, "Well, they would always be welcome at my house, but they would have to leave their partner at home."
I am hoping for, "I want a gay" next time. *smile*

What a wonderful comment you've left for me!
You know, my mom sounds just like your mom. I think it is how their generation was brought up. Its hard for them to change opinions of a lifetime, but slowly but surely I think they are. smile.
yes, let love rule,
