What do Australians Think of Canadians?

November 19th 2006 05:06
Canadian Flag
True North, Strong, and Free
Hey all, I notice this site is based out of Australia and that many posts are about and written by Australians. It's pretty cool to read and learn a little more about the land 'Down Under'. Now my million dollar question is: What do Australians think of Canada and Canadians?

Disclaimer: no million dollar prize will actually be awarded as we Canadians are a humbly cheap bunch

Well, I have a Canadian girlfriend. I always thought Canada was generally cold throughout the year. But I found out the summers can get very hot too.

And I also used to think that the younger people there had a lot of teen angst. But you can blame that on Avril and Alanis.

But the canadian accent is really cute. Especially girls' accent. *wink wink*

Hi Illie-T-Redd, Good choice in picking a Canadian girlfriend, you have good taste, eh!

Thanx for saying Canadian accents are cute...
the Australian accent is so charming too.

I was only in Vancouver for two days, but, having spent most of my life in Sydney, I felt uncannily at home... we have similiar senses of humour, in part a response to counter-US culture. I'd love to see more of Canada and learn more about its people! )

hey postmoderncritic,

I'd like to visit Australia one day. I'm sure I'd have a great time. I love sun and beaches.

I lived in Canada for 2 years and fell in love with the place and the people. Met my fiance their and we both plan to immigrate there in a few years.

I love the snow, the laid back attitude and ofcourse the warped sense of humour.

Cool, John. where in Canada did you live? Is that where you want to live when you immigrate?

Started in Calagary Alberta, moved to Vancouver B.C, will probably move back to B.C.

I think most Aussies don't really know anything about Canada other than what American TV tells us.

I have Canadian cousins, and I love Degrassi High, so I'm different.

I think Australia should invade Canada and burn your igloos to the ground, and pillage your bountiful seal crops to feed our hungry Aussie children.

Hi Pegasus,

Of the Canadians that I have met and dated, I liked their laidback manner very much... I also note with interest, that some Canandians I've known have become insulted if people picked them as Americans.... is that still true...?

Go the Toronto Maple Leafs!

EDIT: Sounded a bit harsh. Basically i think aussies tend to consider Canadians as more liberal Americans.

Hi Luke,

Are you talking about the current incarnation of Degrassi? which is Degrassi: the Next Generation.
Or the original series from the 80s?
Both are excellent TV

Comment by pegasus

November 20th 2006 03:02
Hi Lilla,

Yes, Canadians do not like to be mistaken for Americans (even though we constantly are while traveling).

We often display a Canadian flag prominently on our backpacks or suitcase to show the world which nationality we are!

Not that there's anything wrong with being American, we simply aren't, that's all.

Thanks for compliment about my tag!

Lived in Toronto back in 89/90.

Found Canadians to be very amiable & welcoming yet very open about their dislike of Americans.

If you want to upset a Canadian just call him an American.

But like us they have had their culture steam rolled by the US economy.

Nah, I haven't seen the new Degrassi... I'm talking old school!

Comment by pegasus

November 20th 2006 16:01
The new Degrassi is cool: still confronting tough, controversial youth issues.

Remember how Spike had a baby when she was only 13 or 14? The new show is about that child, Emma, entering Degrassi school at the age of 12. It was kinda neat how they thought of that. Its been on now for about 5 years.

Some of the original characters are on the new version. Sometimes even Joey and Caitlin make appearances.

Luke, you rock! I would consider Degrassi (all versions) as the quintessential Canadiana TV series.

Where did you see it? I know its shown in America as well as Canada. Do you know if its broadcast anywhere else?

Comment by MelissaA

November 21st 2006 23:14
Pegasus, I'm sure I would!
Just the fact that my opinion hasn't changed in 20 years is a testament to that.

Mind you, i'll probably be an old fart by the time I actually ever make it there.

We had it in Australia. It gets shown on the ABC - which is our government channel (like England's BBC, I don't know the American or Canadian equivelents). The ABC repeated it several times, so I got to know it quite well when I was a kid... we used to shout at each other in the playground "You dumb jerk - you should be k-kicked in the h-head!" just like Shane did at Spike when he came back as a brain-damaged LSD reject.

In the new one, a teenaged Emma goes in search of her father, Shane. She is shocked to find him in a nursing home with the brain of child. He started freaking out and scared her away forever.

Did you have a crush on Caitlin? Wasn't Joey Jerimiah a big jerk to cheat on her?

Comment by Luke

November 22nd 2006 03:02
Yes! Joey was the hugest jerk! I felt sorry for Snake in that School's Out special... Wheels and Joey turned into arseholes! I heard Joey gets back with Caitlin in the new series?

And yeah Caitlin was hot stuff. Melanie was cute too.
I never got the Stefanie K thing though, she had a bung face.

Snake is now a TEACHER at Degrassi and he's all about being a goody-goody. Its hilarious. Mr Radich is still teaching & he looks exactly the same.

Joey & Caitlin got back together briefly but Caitlin left to work as an international reporter. If I remember correctly, Joey cheated on her again while she was gone. Anyway, he blew it again, the idiot.

Spike married Snake but a year or 2 later he kissed a hot new teacher & Emma saw him. Spike threw him out. He keeps trying to win her back.

Degrassi is a brilliant show. Too bad they don't have it on over here any more. It was a bit before my time, but I've seen many episodes and Juniour High is undoubtably my favourite. Next Generation seemed to lack something. Check out Neighbours. It's a great Australian soap. Love it.

Sorry that last comment was me. I just didn't type in my Orble tag. Is it true Vancouver has a drug problem, namely heroin? I decided to abandon my beloved Canucks recently. After the Todd Bertuzzi trade, I've become a Panthers man. Still, Canadian hockey is the best.

You watch North American hockey? You are COOL!You must watch via satellite? I'm from Calgary so I'm a Flames fan. They did so well the season before the lock out. We would honk our horns in unison in the streets when we won a game. It was so loud and proud!. Even though we lost the Stanley Cup that year, we were far from disappointed; the Flames did awesome.

I went to uni in Vancouver (UBC). Drugs are prevalent in Vancouvers' East side. The West side is close to the ocean so is more expensive & is where middle class or rich live (and where UBC is). Poor East side is where you'll find drugs, crime, despair, prostitution, homeless, etc.

I didn't go to the East side much but its not too far from downtown so sometimes it would come to you. I think they implemented free needle exchange (addicts can bring in their used needles and will then receive clean needles without fear of being arrested). I think that has helped in the fight against HIV.

Nice. Very positive changes. Sadly, I don't have any kind of satellite. They used to broadcast games on our SBS channel (which is just random sports, foriegn movies, docos etc.. less mainstream stuff.) but they stopped a few years back. Now I just follow online. I sometimes bum around at my mates house watching the play-offs on her Foxtel, but other than that I'm all alone. NHL '02 - '06 was good to me though. I'm waiting for the PS3. Maybe i'll grab '07 on that....

pegasus - sorry for the belated reply food jammers are these 3 guys who create complicated cooking instruments out of simple everyday products. for example the last episode they created ice cream whilst out camping with nothing more than the wild fruits and berries they picked around the area and some cans and ice! the ice cream looked delicious and part of the process was kicking the can around!

Comment by pegasus

Cool! I'll keep an eye out for their show (sounds like cable). Anyone that can make ice cream by kicking a can, get's my vote.
