Ugly is the New Beautiful
December 10th 2006 03:53
Not the stunning blonde bombshell? Downright 'fugly'? Not to worry, as the ugly are coming into their own. There is a new movement glorifying those who are beautiful on the inside, even if the outside is less than perfect. The gorgeously-challenged are asserting themselves full force through their intelligence, charm and competence...and finally gaining recognition.
The American television series, Ugly Betty, showcases such a less-than-fashionable assistant at an uber trendy fashion magazine. Assistant Betty Suarez just doesn't fit the stylish, slim world of fashion publishing and yet it is Betty whose fast-thinking, strong work ethic and kind-heartedness repeatedly save the day.
Betty soon realizes that the perfect beauty ideal glorified by the fashion world is a false, empty and unrealistic one.
Ugly Betty is based on the 1999 Columbian soap opera "Yo soy Betty, la fea" ("I am Betty, the Ugly") and has many versions around the world, showing just how popular the concept of a plain jane underdog succeeding in the world of the beautiful people is.
Does a picture perfect image of beauty prevalent in the media even exist for anyone?
Here's a video showing how a model's' appearance is altered via retouching techniques, leaving the final image chillingly different than the real person who sat for it.
Since even supermodels don't look like their photos, why should the rest of us try to look like that? Why not embrace ourselves as we are, worts and all? and focus on making the inside truly beautiful.
The American version of Ugly Betty premiered September 28, 2006 and airs Thursdays at 8pm ET on ABC (US) and on CityTV (Canada).
England & Australia will begin airing the series in 2007.

Just like you, I didn't think they did THAT much with re-touching.
They showed this video to the model who sat for it, and she was a bit dumbfounded & could hardly recognize herself! Crazy.
Have you ever felt awkward or 'unpretty' due to unrealistic media images? I know I have.
