What names topped the list for your little bundles of joy this year? This year's list is a mix of old-fashioned names making comebacks, and new modern names spelled uniquely.

Unique twists of 2006 included: using 'Y' in place of many a vowel, silent letters thrown in for good measure, putting capitals right in the middle, adding in an apostrophe, and substituting one consonant for another (using 'K' instead of 'C' for example).

My choices for baby names would be:

Girl: Caitlin or Rebecca

Boy: Asher or Dallas

Funnily enough my eldest child has a name that is spelled the original way, but since she was born and the name became very popular, this exact thing has happened with altering the name.

So whereas a number of years ago, everyone would have spelled it correctly straight off the bat, now everyone gets it wrong 9 times out of 10 by spelling it in any of 4 of the more modern ways.

As for my youngest, her name is very uncommon, but also a very old name. I have since come across 5 others with the same name and no 2 are spelled alike.

Hello Mellssa,

Isn't that funny how names are becoming more and more individualized? Even the exact same sounding names are not exactly the same as parents will spell them differently.

Soon it will be the case where each person's name will be a entirely new creation just for them.

Yes, and every single person on the planet is going to have to repeatedly spell out that name for everything on the planet!
I have a hard enough time doing that with my own name, and that's with half the people getting it right the first time around!

I know what you mean!

What does all this say about the direction our society is moving? ULTRA-individualistic = ME ME ME?

Maybe we don't need to read that much into it?

Or what's your take on it?

I don't know.
I know that your name is the grounding on which we all base our individual identities, but some people do just take it oo far.
And what about people that come up with the truly weird names like Frank Zappa and his daughter Moon-Unit????

LOL, don't they know their kids will have a life of being teased about their super weird names? thanks a lot mom & dad. btw, Zappa's son is called Dweezil, or something like that. David Bowie called his kid 'Zowie Bowie'

I know there are 3 weird names for Zappa's kids - that's just the only 'memorable' one. ; )

I remember going to school with a kid whose name was David David. I always wondered why the parents couldn't find a different first name. Is it really that hard?

Love & stuff

LOL! You're all funny buggers.

Completely forgot about Roger Rogerson - no wonder he was so pissed off and became corrupt.

Roger Ramjet
Ahhh, Roger Ramjet - an old cartoon characterthey used to show here in the 80's and 90's.

Here's Wikipedia's version.

"Roger Ramjet is a patriotic and highly moral but not overly bright superhero (kind of a jet age Dudley Do-Right), who is typically out to save the world, with help from his Proton Energy Pills ("PEP"), which give him "the strength of twenty atom bombs for a period of twenty seconds".

On government missions assigned by General G.I. Brassbottom, Ramjet encounters various nemeses during his missions. Typically he is caught, and must be rescued by his crew of sidekicks, the American Eagles (named Yank, Doodle, Dan and Dee [a play on "Yankee Doodle Dandy"]). Although his Eagles appear to be children, each of them flies his own individual ramjet aircraft expertly, along with being obviously much more savvy than their leader."

wonder how I missed that one?

Kinda sounds llike American Dad (but Stan Smith doesn't have super powers)

Comment by MelissaA

Actually, considering how dated it is (Ii think it was originally put together in 1965), you'd be not far off the mark there.
And if it wasn't for the proton pills I imagine Roger would just be a fitter looking version of Stan!

My name was relatively uncommon when I was a baby, and now it's on the list. At least I won't have an "Old person's name" anytime soon.

Hey Sonnet,

So your name's on the list, is it?

I'm gonna guess its "Jack". Am I right?
