The HOT Report - by Craig Hill

THESE are our Youths' Role Models? Paris, Lindsay, Britney or god-forbid, K-Fed?

November 26th 2006 19:53
I once saw an interview of Paris Hilton in which the young socialite was asked what kind of role model she felt she was for teen girls? Our Paris thought deeply, introspectively for a moment before replying with a straight face that she was indeed a GOOD role model for teens! and that moms have come up to her to tell her that she is a good role model for their daughters. My mind boggled because Paris honestly believed it to be so, without a hint of self-deprecation or even a bit of shame. .

My question is: Where have all the good role models gone?

Sure, you could say that people in our everyday lives are our true role models: dear old mom, a dedicated teacher, or perhaps a kindly neighbour are all fine examples to follow.
But, lets face it, we are at a time when Celebrity Rules. Young people hang on what Jessica wears, which boy du jour Lindsay is with, what Paris is doing in latest leaked video, and so on. Like it or not, these Celebs have a profound influence on society. Alas.

"My mind boggled because Paris honestly believed it to be so, without a hint of self-deprecation or even a bit of shame."

It is a shame. It goes to show that people like this suffer from narcism and have no idea what is going on around them.

Well said, Eric. Narcism it definitely is.

I also heard that when Paris was on the set of Saturday Night Live, Tina Fey had a bet as to whether Paris would even once ask about anyone else other than herself. Isn't that hilarious? Apparently Paris did manage to make one Un-Paris remark while there which was "Is Maya Rudolph Italian?" (Maya is half-Black, half Jewish, btw).

What do you think of Kevin Federline? Any redeeming qualities or is he just a lost cause?

My opinion... is that we all have the liberty to choose whatever we will become... al comes from creating a good environment and also good instincts for kids which will lead them to choose best for themselves...This is an interesting post because of the fact that many of us seem to forget that whatever Paris says is for promoting her image... it doesn`t matter how she does it... if someone writes about her that means she exists... The more often everybody writes about her... the better for her commercial image!!!
Kids should learn the difference and adapt in choosing their models based on facts not on commercial images!!!

Good points, Schubler (is that your family name?).

In Paris's case, she has made an artform of 'being famous for being famous'...or in her case "infamous for being infamous"

No Daniel is my name... Schubler is my nickname... it`s an measurement instrument... here... but it`s not spelled the same... but pronouncing it it`s the same!!! I have the tendency to be very accurate and analizing about things and that`s why people have given me this nickname

In relation to role models, I get really angry when I hear parents complaining that actresses, actors, singers, sportspeople etc should be better role models for their kids. The best role model for any child are their own parents.

Paris, Lindsay, Wayne Carey, Shane Warne....these are not role models for children. These are people who are good at their chosen career (well except Paris....what the hell is her career other than being Paris. LOL) but otherwise are fairly average human beings.

Yeah, you can't ignore their influence on those around us. But don't expect them to be role models for your kids. These people can barely form coherant sentences unless they're being told what to say (and I say that as someone who is a bit obsessed with celebrities!0.

The problem, Kylie, is that your theory assumes parents are being that role model. The unfortunate truth is that parents these days just don't have time, or feel time is best spent with the kids.

With this in mind, the kids themselves make the decision on who to look at as a role model.

Hmmm.... mum, or Paris Hilton?

Well Daniel, its good to be accurate and analysing so Schubler is a great nickname for you. Where are you from?

Adrienne, nice to hear from you. No, I haven't seen that picture. Do you have it on your blog?

Hello Kylie, yes, I hear where you are coming from. Parents should be role models but its hard for them to compete with the glamorized exciting world of super-rich celebs.
P.S. who are Wayne Carey & Shane Warne?

hey Eric, sad but true, I think. Cheers Mate.

I`m from Romania... but this doesn`t explain my points of view because the majority of Romanians are much more different than me... due to the difficulties my country is going threw right now!!!

Pegasus,
Amen. Amen, amen, amen.

What more can I say? I have a daughter almost 15 now, and I heard her make the remark the other day that Paris is so cool. I dropped everything and we had a serious talk about that. It's hard to sway the opinion when the girl doesnt have to work, whose main hobby is throwing up and pampering herself and dating whoever she wants...it's sad to be sure.

Oh Voices,

So proud that you took the time to have a serious talk with your daughter. You are a good mom.

As teens mature, they will hopefully realize that Paris and crew are nothing to be admired, and are in fact, people to be pitied.
