Pay It Forward Please

November 21st 2006 03:04
Pay It Forward
Doing something kind for someone without wanting anything in return. Its a simple idea but can ripple effect into something big. What is cool is that a 12 year old child started the Pay It Forward movement by simply completing a school assignment that asked students to THINK OF AN IDEA FOR WORLD CHANGE, AND PUT IT INTO ACTION. For this assignment, the young boy decided to do something nice for 3 people and asked them to pay it forward to 3 other people and so on. Of course, the boy's story has been made into a movie as well as a book (written by the teacher who gave the assignment) and a foundation.

Readers, will you participate? Why not help out a stranger or acquaintance (or 3) just for the sake of helping them. Ask them to Pay It Forward. I'd love to hear about your experiences too.

Click here to find out more about the Pay It Forward Foundation.

Thank-you

I haven't been involved in the pay it forward movement but I've seen similar things go ahead.

Free Hugs is the one I have specifically in mind.

Its great when stuff like that thrives, good on you for doing your bit

Yes, i got your private message, thanks.

Thank-you so much for involving your kids in this. Kids love to help others. I think its a natural instinct they have. We, as adults, should tune into it, too!

Will do mention it Pegasus... in both my Life Sparklers and Life is a Gift. Will mention you of course.
Will just 'Pegasus' do?

Meanwhile I'll have to take a nap first ... quite rundown from an exhausting day.

Hi Pegasus!

This is a great post! I saw the movie a few years back and it truly touched me.

Somehow, the impact of this movie has lessen to lost in this world. It is good to start it up again!

I recently had a problem with finances when I had to overcome the heafty hospital bill that was place on me and my siblings and it was hard to go through. And my truly nice friend has offered a little help and when I thanked her sincerely she just said, "pay it forward then".

It was truly a blessing to see that the act of kindness is still moving and I hope that it will continue to spread once again!

Of course, I will do my part to "pay forward" as well. ^_^

Well, it sure is more productive than chain letters via email! Pay it forward is a great concept... and can be simple yet profound.

Hello Pegasus...

Pay It Forward (the concept) is an innate part of my culture, my race, as a form of karmic contribution....a chain of action and re-action.
I try to live it on a daily basis...I say try because it's very easy to get caught up in paying it inward but I do shake that off just in time...
Thank you for the reminder.

What do you mean by paying it inward DuskDevi?

Sorry Jessica...trying to be clever with my wordplay but bummed out bigtime!

Paying It Inward - getting self absorbed, looking out for self first...

I see.

The self-centered, stingy issue we are talking about then. ^_^

"What is it in for me?" is always the common question when someone asks for help to the "supposing helper".

Kind of saddening whenever this arises.

Hello Jessica...and apologies Pegasus..

No, not so much that "what's in it for me?", not in my case at least...when I feel I'm paying it inward, I feel I'm in my shell and too burdened with my own 'problems' and 'stress' to see the Big Karmic Contribution Picture.

Everyone has their paying it inward moments.
It's human nature.
Paying It Forward is human nurture.

Crazy that I read this post today of all days...I was thinking abou this and applying it to the roads...why? Well hav you driven in Sydney traffic lately???!!! It is very angry making. I have been infuriated by the rudeness, and poor driving BUT, I know it doesn't help for me to be that way, or to be angered, so I just drive carefully and let others through where possible...I guess I am doing it in the hope that there'll be better adn happier drivers in general, and so that my driving experience will be better...Even if that driver passes it on to one other driver, not necessarily to me...that's enough.

I also like dusk devi's comment about human nurture...and on the roads there is a huge lack of that...I hope this catches on!

Hi Vixter (and apologies again Pegasus)...

I hear ya sister!
I think as you do on the road...I will not add to the chaos... all these people given license to drive themselves crazy....just so they can get to the next red light the quickest? Sheesh.

I heart everything you heart Vixter.

Hello Jessica,

That's great that you are a recipient of someone's self-less kindness. There are some wonderful people out there!

Hi Wendi,

Chain letters try to intimidate you into doing something while Pay It Forward is about your choice to help others. Thanks for your comment!

hey DuskDevi,

Yes, Pay It Forward is a part of many religions (ex The Golden Rule) but we may have forgotten! Luckily, this movement can remind us.

Hi Vixter,

I'm happy to hear you apply this while driving. That is definitely a place we need to. I always try to let people in while driving but am a bit offended if they don't give me a thank-you wave. I guess I should let them in just to let them in...not for the thank-you!

I was thinking of traffic as well, but I see that topic was covered. *smiles*

Pay it inward - I get it, and I know some people JUST like that - not concerned about what's in it for them, but too busy or burdened in their own doings to see beyond their own circumstance. We all slip into it sometimes, but it's admirable when we can pull ourselves up by the bootstraps.

I try to do things constantly that are beneficial - I have this theory that I should leave a place better than I found it, however, I don't always push for the pay it forward. I volunteer at riding stables for special needs children, we always participate in food drives or other charitable tasks, and much of the work I've done in my life has been on a volunteer basis. I don't ask others to pay it forward, but I do hope my contributions make a difference, in some small way, in the way others view the world.

One funny example: I was driving home with my 2 kids from a trip to Pennsylvania, about 8 hours from my Kentucky home. At one of the stops for gas, I pulled into the pump just as an elderly man was pulling forward to the pump in front. He claimed the pump I pulled up to was broken and made a joke about his paying for my gas. He'd slid his credit card but couldn't get the gas to pump, so he pulled forward. I had to show him how to work the pump to get his gas, something a lot of people wouldn't take the time to do.

I slid my credit card at my own pump, and it was accepted fine, so I pumped my gas and gathered my receipt just as the elderly man was pulling away.

I noticed the name and credit card number on the receipt were not mine, so I actually ran to catch his car and waved at his window to encourage him to stop. He rolled down his window and I asked him if his name was "X". He actually did end up paying for my gas. At that, we both parked, went into the store, and it took us 10 minutes to get the mess sorted out, but we managed. On the way out, the guy asked me where I was from. I answered, "Kentucky", to which he replied, "Well, they must do a good job of raisin' folks there 'cause anyone else would have been downright pleased to have me pay for their gas - especially with gas prices these days!"

It wasn't Kentucky, it was just compassion and honesty, things that seem to be in shortage these days. He was right - most other people would have been pleased with the free tank of gas at someone else's expense. Whether or not that man would pay it forward, I have no idea - but I know for sure it made both of our days better for having had the interaction.

I'd have commented on your other posts, but they're directed at Aussies and I'm from the United States.

Hi Wendi,

Thank-you for your comment and for your wonderful attitude. Way to go on your commitment to volunteering and community service. I know the man at the gas station was touched by your kindness that day.

I have visited America many times and have always found Americans enthusiastic and very helpful to visitors.

My good -hearted pal Wendi talking and as ever, with honesty and candor ... always a delight to hear from you Wendi L. You've rendered me speechless. And you know what that means.

It's too early here in Sydney. I'm half-awake as the morning dew hasn't even completely broken. Keep well mon ami.

Obviously, Pegasus has done very well, in choosing his topic - both for what it is all about, as well as generating traffic.

G'day!

Hi DuskDevi

"Paying It Forward is human nurture." I do agree... unfortunately, it isn't Human Nature these days.

Yes we all do always cramp up with our own stress and problems and forgotten that there are more people out there who truly have worse problems in life than us.

We should start truly be thankful that we aren't so bad after all and start paying-forward whenever we manage to.

Hi Pegasus,

*I just got here*

I love this concept and as someone said earlier what a great things to involve the children in... an extension really of our philosophies already... I just hope they don't get arrested like that other fellow who was handing out free hugs...

lately, it seems that for every movement towards unity there are three to continue separation...keeping us all divided... perhaps not here in Orbleland, at least...

Once you learn the truth, set your intent and focus on the positive...
...I pray this movement goes far...

Lilla...

Pegasus,
I wanted to fill you in on what our family has done lately. I know that you read my post on helping ease the financial burden of a family in crisis. I also wanted to let you know about something else...

My sister in law recently passed away, just before Christmas. She left behind two younger children. My brother was overwhelmed by everything, so my mother, my children and I all went over to their house and cleaned for them, got everything ready for Christmas, did some of their Christmas shopping, etc. We made sure the tree was put up, etc.

It was difficult, and no, they weren't strangers...but sometimes, I think that we could all afford to start in our own families, with the deterioration of families at such a high rate.

My brother couldn't thank us enough, as if he had to at all, but it was a very heartfelt time for our family.

We are currently on the hunt for new opportunities! *smile*

Beautiful! You've touched me, Voices.

Yes, paying it forward should include our family and friends as well as strangers. Good on you.

You are a good and kind person, Voices. I know you are not paying it forward for my or anyone else's praises, but it is still nice to get praises too Makes one feel good in the best possible way.

After the new year I will do that post updating this topic.
Stay tuned!

hugs,

Peg
