How Do You Worship?

February 13th 2007 17:53
Praying cartoon
My family is Catholic but more on the relaxed side of things.

A few years ago I worked as a Youth Leader at the United Church of Canada (a modern, liberal Protestant denomination).

What religion do I see myself as then? To me, I definitely view myself as a Christian -neither Catholic nor Protestant - or maybe a bit of both.

Sometimes, it seems like Churches interpret or even filter the word of God to suit themselves and often melodramatic politics erupt. Both turn me off, turn me away.

Do we need a physical building to worship? Can we pray directly to God and cut out the middleman so to speak...especially if the 'middleman' is potentially putting us off the Lord?

Even though Sho seeks guidance from heaven and earthly surroundings, ninja must understand that true spirituality comes from within.

"God bless Shinto, the lazy man's religion."

Hi Sho Kosugi,

true spirituality comes from within

A truly beautiful sentiment.

Ummm, well I pray five times a day at designated times throughout and on Fridays I go to a Mosque.

I don't as a muslm subscribe to the middle man between you and god. In fact it's quite the opposite, praying to someone else besides god or asking someone to pray for you under the notion you can't pray yourself is a pretty big sin.

Theres nothing wrong with asking people to pray for you, but you have to pray for yourself too, otherwise you are getting dangerously close to attributing other people with godly powers, which is a no-no in Islam.

Ahmed,

Interesting points.

Do you think the world's major religions are praying to the same God?

Yes, but probably going about it the wrong way (looking at it as a Muslim of course ). Also it may be the same god but different people like to give their own twist on what god is exactly so it kind of changes from one religion to another.

I don't know too much about catholics but they say god is a trinity, Muslims say he's just one god, no trinity, just one.

Do Muslims believe God can or will come to Earth in human form (like Christians and Jews believe)?

No, umm, how it goes is that Jesus (which we don't believe was the son of god) was sent up to heaven.

He will come back after the, as christians call, the anti-christ comes to earth.

We don't subscribe to the belief god has ever come to earth as a human being or had a son.

It should be known as total awareness that god or gods come in all infinite packages. To assume that prayer is only given to one monothestic god is to assume the darkness of the Moon, and that is an error that no ninja can afford.

Coincidentally, a Barbarian by the name of Conan gave careful insight into this thought:

Conan: What gods do you pray to?
Subotai: I pray to the four winds... and you?
Conan: To Crom... but I seldom pray to him, he doesn't listen.
Subotai: [chuckles] What good is he then? Ah, it's just as I've always said.
Conan: He is strong! If I die, I have to go before him, and he will ask me, "What is the riddle of steel?" If I don't know it, he will cast me out of Valhalla and laugh at me. That's Crom, strong on his mountain!
Subotai: Ah, my god is greater.
Conan: [chuckles] Crom laughs at your four winds. He laughs from his mountain.
Subotai: My god is stronger. He is the everlasting sky! Your god lives underneath him.

Well I took one look at the post title and then one look at the picture which emphasised exactly what I was thinking.

I'm C of E, I call myself a christian first and protestant second.

We are all realy praying to the same, one God, whether we call him by the name of God, Allah or Buddha. Religion is a structure invented not by God, but by Man.

My dealings with God are one on one - if I want to pray to God, I will do it myself in the comfort of my own surroundings. God hears me through my thoughts and my heart along with my words - I don't need to go to a church and be told how to do it 'properly'.

I agree with Mellisa in part. Not trying to argue here, this is the way I look a it.

Islamically god hasnt given a specific way you can ask for help, you can just ask at any time of the day or night in any language without needing to go into poses or anything. In fact praying to ask for help from god is an important part of Islam because it reminds you of gods existence.

However god does have a specific way he has ordered Muslims to pray in five times a day. One of the reasons for this is to help us define ourselves as Muslim and different to Christians and Jews for example by the way we pray on a regular schedule.

I go to the Mosque every friday to hear a sermon, thats for education purpouses and partly because I'm obliged to attend every friday if I can.

Thats just my opinion on the issue of god not asking people to pray in any given manner.

Actually Ahmed, reading your comment made me think of something else, (you could probably get a new posting out of this one Peg if you wanted to,) but I wonder how many people pray to God because they are actually asking for help?

I only ask because unless it's really serious, I very rarely ask for actual help, but rather give thanks to God for looking after all of us thus far and everything else in general.

When it comes to getting help, I usually look for it in a more 'earthly' respect if you know what I mean.

Well that kind of reminds me of a story they tell Muslim kids.

Basically there was this man who asked the Muhammed if she should tie the cammal to keep it from running away or pray to god to keep the cammal from doing that, Muhammed's response was that he should tie the cammal and pray to god that hte cammal doesn't run away.

So it is a two way thing really, you do what must be done and ask for gods blessing to it.

I guess there's always the old adage of 'God helps those who help themselves" as well.
