Former President Gerald Ford Dies at 93
December 27th 2006 05:33
Ex-President Gerald Ford has died at age 93 years.
Gerald Rudolph Ford, Jr. (July 14, 1913 to Dec. 26, 2006) was the 38th President of the United States. His presidential term was from 1974 to 1977.
Ford was the only vice-president (1973-74) and president to have never been elected to either office. When Spiro Agnew resigned, Ford was appointed Vice President of the United States at the height of the Watergate scandal, which eventually led to Richard Nixon's resignation. Ford subsequently succeeded (unelected) to the presidency.
Ford was the longest living president, surpassing Reagan's record in November 2006.
Ford is survived by his wife, Betty, and she is the person who broke the news of her husband's passing.
The former first lady was instrumental in creating the Betty Ford Center whose mission is "to provide effective alcohol and other drug dependency treatment services, including programs of education and research to help women, men and families begin the process of recovery."
On Sept 8, 1974 Gerald Ford pardoned disgraced ex-president Richard Nixon for any crimes Nixon may have committed while president.
