Fight Racism Now

November 23rd 2006 02:14
Anti-Racism
from Anti Racism Project
So where are we now in the journey for equality? The recent rantings of a Seinfeld star have disgusted many. Mel Gibson did his own mouthing off as well. We've all heard the stereotypical jokes or off-colour comments (so to speak) in our own lives. Is it that officially racism is a no-no, but in practice, it is just below the surface ready to erupt?

What can one do to combat racism? It seems like an uphill battle, doesn't it? Hey, its easier to just go along with the 'joke' when co-workers, aquaintances or friends make fun of others who are different from them. Well, sometimes 'easier' isn't what is important. It is very difficult to do the right thing, to stand up for what is right and to be the first and, perhaps, only person to do it!
Stop Racism

* Tolerance * Respect * Open-Mindedness * Understanding * Human Rights for all * Dignity * You

Why are 'You' on the list above? Because all of the above starts with you. You can't control what others do, but you can control what you do. The beauty of this is that your example might show someone else a different, more tolerant way!
When we realize that we are sisters and brothers in a Global Village, that while the outside might look a little different, the insides are so similar....then we finally understand.

Here are some links to check out:

What can YOU do to eliminate racism?
Anti-Racism Tool Kit
: "Racism in our society may have become less obvious but it still occurs all around us in subtle ways. The YWCA has assembled a list of resources to help you join us in our fight to eliminate racism."

Anti Racism Project: "The world is a global society full of rich diversity of race. We feel that it is important not to judge a person's worth as a human being based upon one part of who they are. That it is important and absolutely necessary to treat each person with respect and not judge their character based upon stereotypes and misconceptions"

The Anti-Racism Information Service :" More than thirty years ago (in 1965), the United Nations gave the world a juridical instrument designed to end discrimination."

Peg,

I think you're right and I think you are wrong. People in the same family often don't get along and discriminate against one another, that's nothing to do with race, generally.

Whilst your ideals are excellent I think behaviour often needs to be modified and in doing that the effects of racism, in whatever form, are less damaging.

Of course we are all God's children under one sun, and all are precious in his eyes.

We all need to acknowledge this. But I think it's time we moved on and all learn to get along whatever reasons there are for not being able to.

This does not make the point you raise any less valid, but re-iterating the same old problems just does not allow people to move forward.

Incidentally I found your illustration delightful, what could be more attractive that each of those people and skin colour enhances that image, it is really charming.

Hi Katy,

I respect your opinion, many good points....
But, I feel if we just 'move on' then that is another injustice to those wronged. We need to put our selves in the other's shoes and even feel their pain, have an epiphany, and grow as human beings.

Yes, people in the same family or race often don't get along. But this is not in the same realm as someone discriminating against you simply because you are of a different race. We do need to identify why racism exists -address those issues -only then can we overcome it and truly get along.

thanks,
Pegasus

Hi Adrienne,

Yes, I've seen that video & I was shocked & appalled.
I had had warm & fuzzy feelings towards the man who played Kramer, he was one of my fave tv characters.

But, alas, now I can neither respect nor condone his behavioiur of late.

truly sad,

Peg

people create thier own stereotypes by the way they act. people of race can be racist themselves.so it all starts at the "respect" level. i have trouble tolerating someone whos not showing me and/or my family respect. we would get alot farther if we could forget the past and move on.
