Do You Volunteer?
January 19th 2007 05:12
Tonight my friend and I went to the Food Bank to learn about volunteer opportunities. Not knowing what to expect, we were in awe to find a huge warehouse with shelves stacked to the ceiling full of crates of food. Such a large facility brought home the fact that there are many a hungry family out there in (supposedly prosperous) Calgary.
Conveyor belts flew and volunteers quickly grabbed their pre-assigned items to place into emergency food hampers. Interestingly, there was a huge walk-in refrigerator for perishables - no, scratch that - a drive-in refrigerator! At last, we checked out the gigantic loading dock where nine trucks at once can unload donated food. It was all quite a production: a kind of controlled chaos consisting of gliding forklifts, an energetic gaggle of volunteers and towering crates of food, food, food!
The volunteer coordinator was a friendly, talkative lady who toured us around the facility. She will contact us tomorrow to see if we will commit to volunteering. My friend and I are pretty excited and have decided to do it. Some volunteer positions we could participate in are: screening potential food hamper recipients, sorting donations into appropriate bins, making up the hampers or handing out hampers to the hungry.
One point that stuck out in my mind was when we found out that the Food Bank serves the working poor; people who, although employed, just cannot make ends meet.
We can't wait to start volunteering and help out our community!
What about you? Have you ever volunteered? Where and what did it mean to you?
Cheers!

When I was working in the corporate world (pre children) we did a lot of charity work ie organising golf days etc.
These days I just hand over my money in cheque form.
It is gratifying but is amazing at how much red tape exists.
Love & stuff

Good on you for volunteering!
I work with disabled kids and adults in various capacities... keeps me off the streets *wink* plus it's really rewarding...
I alwasy think, wow : if everyone did a few hours community service each week - well, I think the results would be amazing!
Have a great day

That donation cheque helps so much, I'm sure. I also donate to Foster Parents Plan which helps less fortunate kids all over the world. The little girl I help lives in Kenya. My donation is only $33 a month but that amount is enough to ensure this little girl has enough food, clean water, medical care and education.
hey Bhumika,
You brought a smile to my face when I read that you volunteer at the Y, what a great organization! keep at it.
Hi Lilla my dear one,
Yes, you are so right, if everyone could volunteer just a bit of their time, what a better world it would be.
Thanks everyone for your lovely comments.

Fun Facts
I've done my fair shareor volunteering - I wouldn't mind doing it now, but hubby says I have to have a 'real' job. OK, OK, so I'm going back to Uni this year which is dreadfully expensive, so he's right.
But later on in life I'd be quite happy to get back into it again!
