The HOT Report - by Craig Hill

Do Australians love the Queen?

November 20th 2006 16:16
The Queen
Well, sticking with my theme of asking Aussies what they think, now I'm interested in knowing if you think of yourselves as being a current, vital part of the Commonwealth? Are we a Commonwealth family which includes Canada, the UK, Australia, India? Is this idea out-dated.

Do you consider Queen Elizabeth to be the 'official' head of state? Are you monarchists?

As a Canadian, I grew up singing both 'O Canada' AND 'God Save the Queen' at school assemblies (but nowhere else did we sing the British anthem). We do still consider ourselves as part of the Commonwealth but obviously as independant, equal members.

On a trip to Germany a few years ago, as I was walking in a town square, I heard a man speak the name of the Queen amongst his German language conversation. Not speaking German, I didn't know the context, but the way he said her name sounded to me like he may have been making fun of her. Almost subconciously, involuntarily, I became quite irked at the thought of someone bad-mouthing the Queen. Up to this point, I had thought of myself as quite distanced from anything British, traditional, monarchist, etc.

In Australia we have a Governor-General who represents the Queen, but his functions are purely ceremonial and he has no real say in national affairs.
The only time I thought about the Queen this year was during the telecast of the Commonwealth Games from Melbourne, in which a young boy sang a very pro-English song to the Queen, who had arrived to witness the opening.
We had a referendum on whether Australia should become a republic a few years ago, and while the majority said no I'm sure that in ten or twenty year's time we will eventually become one.
England seems very far from here, so I really don't think about the Royal Family much. )

We also have a governor general who has a variety of diplomatic functions such as representing Canada at State funerals or inagurations or such if Prime Minister unavailable. While the position has no official power, we look to her as a role model, instrument for social activism and quitessential Canadian.
